We are proud to announce that the Missouri S&T-led Critical Minerals and Materials for Advanced Energy (CM2AE) Tech Hub has been awarded $28.5 million in implementation funds from the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration (EDA). These funds, provided through the CHIPS and Science Act, will support the construction of an 18,000-square-foot test-bed facility on the Missouri S&T campus.
This state-of-the-art facility will serve as a cornerstone for developing advanced methodologies in critical minerals processing, enabling transformative changes in the nation’s supply chain for advanced energy systems.
Key Milestones:
- Facility Construction: The facility will focus on hydrometallurgical processing and workforce development, supporting both research and regional economic growth.
- Project Scope: The test-bed will feature adaptable equipment to simulate future facilities and enable rapid testing of potential technologies using primary and recycled sources like battery recycling waste, slag heaps, and mines.
- Regional and National Impact: Within 10 years, this initiative aims to strengthen U.S. critical minerals mining, refining, and recycling, advancing national security and energy independence.
Missouri S&T’s CM2AE Tech Hub was selected as one of 31 national Tech Hubs from nearly 400 applicants in October 2023, highlighting the university’s leadership in critical minerals research.
