Subject: Century of light

Summary: Missouri S&T’s century-long legacy in electrical engineering traces back to 1892 with the enrollment of its first Japanese student, Zentaro Iijima, who inspired the early roots of electrical study at the university. Iijima’s passion for electricity led him to establish the MSM Electrical Club and propose a power plant for Rolla, a project that set the stage for the university’s enduring impact in the field. This legacy expanded in 1915 with the Buford Act, allowing MSM to offer engineering degrees, and evolved into a full electrical engineering department by 1924. Today, S&T celebrates over 11,000 electrical engineering alumni and a century of growth, with the Academy of Electrical and Computer Engineering commemorating those who paved the way.
